In Fllaka, Albania, 9-year-old Anita's childhood is overshadowed by adult responsibilities. Each day, she cares for her younger brother while her mother works long hours away from home. Her family’s struggle deepened after the father became abusive, eventually abandoning them and leaving them to face poverty alone.

It was when MWB came alongside them through our Family Sponsorship Program that Anita finally received the support she desperately needed, unlocking new opportunities.

One day, Arjana, an MWB coordinator, asked Anita if she wanted to attend Summer Camp. Hesitant at first due to her responsibilities, she eventually opened up about wanting to go. Once her mother recognised the weight of the opportunity, she agreed to let her go.

A safe and inviting place for children who come from poverty

Arriving at camp, Anita initially withdrew. Years of responsibility and emotional hardship had left her uncertain how to simply be a child.

But with support from camp leaders, she started to see how she could belong there, embracing the social environment.

“From that moment, we saw a different Anita. She began to interact with other children and tried to fit in,” Arjana said.

“Her eyes started to shine with the joy she experienced each day. We saw her emotional and spiritual situation transform day by day. She started to feel valued and loved by the people around her, something that’s missing from her everyday life.”

Giving children a holiday away from chores

Through meeting other kids, playing fun games, enjoying healthy meals, and hearing of God’s love, Anita discovered her purpose and identity beyond responsibilities and struggles at home.

“I was thrilled when the camp director called my name on the last day and gave me a certificate of commendation as the best girl at camp. My heart was pounding, and I couldn’t wait to show my mum the certificate. I want to come again next year.”

Even after just one Summer Camp, children who experience this safe and loving environment return home with radiant smiles – the impact of this week rippling into their everyday lives by instilling resilience, confidence, and the hope of a brighter future.
