A break from poverty: Codruta is free to have fun at Summer Camp in Romania
A girl living in poverty in Romania finds a place to learn and grow at Summer Camp14th April 2025

11-year-old Codruta was adopted as a baby in Romania, but her life changed when her parents’ successful clothing business collapsed. With her mother suffering a stroke and her father turning to alcohol, the burden of housework fell on her.
“Codruta is deeply loved by her family, yet the living conditions she endures are far beyond what any child should have to experience,” says Cosmin, who works for MWB.
“Last year, Codruta wasn’t allowed by her parents to go to Summer Camp. She had to stay home and take care of her nephews, missing out on the opportunity to experience the joy and freedom of camp, and having to bear responsibilities far beyond her years,” Cosmin said.
“This reality underscores the challenges many children from poor communities face, where the chance to simply be a kid is often overshadowed by the demands of everyday life.”Cosmin, MWB

Codruta sees a life outside of childhood poverty through Summer Camp
When Codruta finally attended Summer Camp, volunteer Cristina witnessed her radiant personality:
“The extreme poverty Codruta lives in at home is hard to describe, but she still has such a bright spirit. She’s like a ray of sunshine in her family and community, and her mother adores her.”
Codruta has been to Summer Camp twice now, and there’s no doubt that it keeps her light shining.
“I like being at camp,” she said. “It’s a place where I can enjoy playing games with my old and new friends. The fun seems endless, and I am happy.
“Learning from the Bible is another highlight for me. This year, I’ve especially loved learning about Joshua and his mission. His courage and faith give me strength. I know well that Jesus loves me and loves us all, and I hope I can come back next year.”

Providing active support against poverty by giving children what they need
Alexandru, director of the Mission in Romania, said, “Along with clean rooms, good living conditions, access to toilets and showers, and delicious food, there is a well-prepared program featuring lots of fun, sports and games. Most importantly, all participants hear the good news about Jesus, and many receive Him as their Lord and Saviour.”
