Never enough money: high unemployment in a Roma community

“There was never enough money. Our lives were filled with deprivation.”

Like many young Roma girls growing up in poverty in Bulgaria, Nasca thought that getting married would solve her problems.

“When it was just my husband and I, we managed OK,” Nasca said. “But when we had our two boys, things got worse. Electricity and water bills were rising, and we couldn't manage to pay for everything.”

Unemployment is high in the Roma community where Nasca and Mario live. While Mario was happy to take on any job he could find, whether chopping firewood or weeding gardens, his low wages meant that they were always struggling.

In Bulgaria, 86% of Roma families in Bulgaria are at risk of poverty, compared to 22% for the general population.

Feeling cared for: emotional and spiritual support

Thankfully, the young family ended up enrolling in Mission Without Borders’ family sponsorship program. Alongside regular material support, MWB staff member Spaska, a family sponsorship coordinator, gives the couple and their young children the spiritual and emotional support they need.

"My husband and I had many problems between us, but Spaska told us what the Bible says and gave us advice. Our relationship is really solid now." Nasca

Our family coordinators are essential to the transformation that we see. As local staff, our coordinators understand the issues that families face and the communities they live in. Their ongoing emotional support improves families’ wellbeing, giving them courage and hope and drawing them out of isolation.

Mario said, “At first we were very sceptical because we’ve always relied on ourselves, but when we received the first package of food, we really felt cared for and much more secure.”

Nasca said, “My husband and I had many problems between us, but Spaska told us what the Bible says and gave us advice. Our relationship is really solid now.

“Spaska is my psychologist. She knows me and she understands me very well.”

A dream of financial stability

Nasca, Mario and their children are only at the beginning of their sponsorship journey – and have a long way to go before they can manage well without support. However, thanks to our generous sponsors, we take the time with each family to ensure lasting positive change. Relationships are key, and coordinators like Spaska build trust and offer advice, helping families overcome challenges and secure the resources they need for a better future.

Nasca said, “My husband and I dream of being financially stable. Despite our difficulties in life, I’ve already seen some of my dreams come true, thanks to God. God put people like Spaska in our lives to open our eyes to see that there is light and hope in this dark world.”

Sponsor a family like Nasca’s today and help them take life-changing steps towards a sustainable future.
